About The Ornithologist

What is The Ornithologist?

The Ornithologist is an independent online magazine dedicated to bird science, conservation stories, and ornithological education. We publish in-depth features, field reports, expert interviews, and learning modules designed to make ornithology accessible and engaging.

Is the magazine free?

At launch, all articles are freely available to everyone.
In the coming weeks, selected content will become available only to supporting subscribers, while others remain open-access.

Why do some articles have a lock icon?

This means the article is visible only to paid members. Your subscription helps us continue publishing independent science-based journalism on birds.

What do I get as a free subscriber?

Free subscribers receive:

  • Full access to open-access articles
  • Editorial updates and feature highlights
  • Educational previews and early access notices
  • Access to the free modules of our upcoming Ornithologist Academy — a learning hub designed to deepen your understanding of bird science and ornithology.

The Academy is currently under development, with new modules being added progressively. As a free subscriber, you’ll be the first to know when new lessons go live.

What are the benefits of paid membership?

Paid members enjoy:

  • Full access to all content
  • Access to learning modules and bonus material
  • Supporting independent bird journalism

How often is content published?

We publish new articles weekly and update learning modules on a rolling basis.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes — anytime, directly through your account settings. No cancellation fees.

Who runs The Ornithologist?

Led by Gyorgy Szimuly, a lifelong birder and conservationist, the magazine is supported by a growing network of writers, scientists, and photographers.

How can I collaborate or contribute?

Photographers, researchers, and conservation organisations are welcome to get in touch.
Please visit our Contact page or email editor@theornithologist.org.

Where does my subscription money go?

Every subscription helps fund our editorial work, platform maintenance, image licensing, and outreach — allowing us to remain fully independent and ad-free.

In time, The Ornithologist also aims to channel a portion of its income to support underfunded bird conservation and ornithological research projects around the world. Your support helps lay the foundation for this broader mission.
